As Expo '92 coincided with the 500th anniversary of the "discovery" of America, the theme of that world's fair was The Age of Discovery. Entomological boxes by Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz contain a selection of composed butterflies and moths, assembled from the wings of Lepidoptera gathered from all over the world, and joined to tiny human bodies. In nature, the role of these flying insects is pollination, gathering a dusting of pollen along their legs, and carrying it from one plant to another. Delicate color and dramatic markings attract mates, and allow Lepidoptera to dissemble in the presence of predators. Martin and Muñoz cross-pollinated human with Lepidoptera fusing them into new forms.

Artists Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz create large-scale photomontages and 9-inch tall snow globes that reveal landscapes that harbor sinister secrets. Landscapes covered in darkness with a wintry blanket of snow set the stage for a narrative to unfold. The artists begin with the tiny figures that often inhabit the small worlds of snow globes and model trains. They are physically transformed to tell stories that have taken an odd and sinister turn. The scenes are vaguely evocative of a Hitchcock film or the dark comedy Fargo. They also hint at the fears that are encountered living in contemporary society.
